Tinnitus is the ringing, buzzing, hissing or roaring sound in the ears. It usually happens when the microscopic end of the hearing nerve in the inner ear is damaged. This is not a psychiatric problem as one may initially think. The constant ringing is not something you imagine but it is really happening. No one will be able to hear it except you. It normally goes away but for some, it stays. And this can be very bothersome and uncomfortable. It is said that tinnitus is prevalent to people above 40 but recently, more and more youngster are getting it, probably because of the increase in daily noise level subjected to ones ears like using earphones for MP3 players or iPod. Other causes could be working in noisy surroundings without using any protective equipment to cover one’s ears. This could result to tinnitus or worse, hearing loss. Leisure activities can also be a culprit for this condition. Aside from extensive use of devices like what I mentioned above, going to concerts with loud music can also damage your ears. This is especially true with rock concerts and rock stars usually suffer from tinnitus. There is no actual cure for tinnitus but there are certain treatments which can help in coping up with it. What I am using is the tinnitus retraining therapy. This is a form of a habituation therapy wherein one ceases to see tinnitus as an issue. It works for well for me and I am happier now.
